Osteria: In the past, an osteria was a place where locals gathered to play cards and drink wine. This type of establishment didn't always serve food, rather, an osteria was quite similar to a bar. Osterias have transitioned throughout the years and now they are closely tied to trattorias.

Carmine Ussano is the co-owner of Osteria 500 at Waterside Place in Lakewood Ranch. His three partners include Andrea De Dominicis, Giuseppe Del Sole (the co-owner of Napule), and Salvatore Scaccino.

Osteria, owned by Valerio Iorio and Al Cefaratti, opened in spring; hours are 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, until midnight on Friday, and Saturday from 5 p.m. to midnight.

The term “osteria” has its roots in Italy and was originally used to denote a place that served wine and simple food. The word “osteria” is derived from “oste”, which translates to “innkeeper” or “landlord” in English. This term was borrowed from the Old French word “oste”, which carries the same meaning.
